1. Manage Ad Preferences
You can control what types of ads are shown to you by adjusting your ad preferences:
- Desktop:
- Log into your Facebook account.
- Click on the downward arrow in the top right corner and select Settings & Privacy.
- Then click on Settings.
- In the left sidebar, select Ads.
- Here, you can review and adjust your preferences, including interests, advertisers you’ve interacted with, and more.
- Mobile App:
- Open the Facebook app and tap on the three horizontal lines (menu).
- Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then select Settings.
- Scroll down to find Ads and tap on it.
- Here, you can manage your preferences similar to the desktop version.
2. Hide Specific Ads
If you see an ad that you don’t like or find irrelevant, you can hide it:
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the ad.
- Select Hide ad. You may also see options like Why am I seeing this ad?, which can help you understand why it was shown to you and provide options to adjust your ad preferences.
3. Limit Ads Based on Activity
You can limit ads based on your activity outside of Facebook:
- In the Ads section of your settings, look for options related to Ads based on your activity.
- You can opt-out of allowing Facebook to use data from partners to show you ads.
4. Use an Ad Blocker
While not specific to Facebook, using an ad blocker in your web browser can help reduce or hide ads on many websites, including Facebook when accessed via a web browser. However, this may affect your experience on other sites as well.
5. Consider Privacy Settings
Review your privacy settings on Facebook to see how much data you’re sharing, as this can also influence the types of ads you receive. You can adjust who sees your posts and limit data sharing with advertisers.
6. Check the Audience Network Settings
Facebook ads may be shown through its Audience Network, which displays ads on third-party apps and websites. While you cannot disable it completely, you can reduce the scope:
- In the Ads settings, look for similar options related to ads shown off Facebook and adjust accordingly.
While it may not be possible to completely turn off ads on Facebook, by managing your ad preferences, hiding specific ads, and using ad blockers, you can significantly reduce the ads you see and customize them to better suit your interests. Regularly reviewing your settings can help maintain control over your ad experience on the platform.
